High Water Bill? Check for Swimming Pool Leaks & Water Use.

Is your water bill climbing with no obvious reason in sight? If your high water bill keeps showing up month after month, and you have a swimming pool, you could be paying for thousands of gallons of water wasted by a leak. Understanding how hidden water leaks—especially in pools—can impact your bill is critical for every San Antonio homeowner. At South Texas Pool Leak Detection, we use Leaktronics’ top-tier leak detection equipment to pinpoint and stop leaks fast, saving you money and stress. This article dives into why your water bill is so high, how to spot pool leaks, and what you can do to keep your utility bill in check.

What Causes a High Water Bill?

There are several common causes of high water bills. Many homeowners immediately suspect leaks inside the home, such as running toilets or dripping faucets. But often, outdoor sources like swimming pool leaks, broken irrigation lines, or a faulty water main are behind the spike in water use. Even a small leak can waste hundreds of gallons of water per month, increasing your bill so high that it feels out of control.

Regularly check for leaks in your toilets, water heater, and around plumbing fixtures. But don’t ignore the impact of hidden water leaks outdoors—especially if you have a swimming pool.

How Can Pool Leaks Impact Water Bills?

Pool leaks are a major, often invisible, source of excessive water loss. If your swimming pool loses water beyond regular evaporation, your water consumption may be far higher than you think. A small leak in a pool can lose thousands of gallons of water per month, directly translating to higher water bills due. The bigger the leak, the more dramatic the jump in your utility bill. Pool leaks drain your wallet just as surely as they drain your pool.

Why Are Pool Leaks So Hard to Find?

Pool leaks can occur for various reasons—cracks in the pool, issues in the plumbing lines from the public water supply, or faulty fittings. These leaks are often underground or within the pool structure, making them invisible. Sometimes you only discover the problem because of an increase in your water bill.

At South Texas Pool Leak Detection, we use Leaktronics’ professional leak detection technology to find leaks fast, even in hard-to-reach places. This technology helps prevent water waste and unnecessary water use by quickly identifying and fixing the source of the leak.

How Do I Check for Leaks That Cause High Water Use?

If you suspect a leak, first turn off all the water in your home. Then, check your water meter. If the meter continues to move, even when everything is off, you likely have a hidden water leak. To further narrow it down, monitor your water level in the swimming pool over a few days. Does it keep dropping, or do you notice wet spots around the pool area? These are signs your pool is leaking.

In addition, unexplained water waste in your home—like running water sounds or soggy patches in the yard—can indicate a leak in the water main or pipes connected to the pool.

How Much Water Can a Pool Leak Waste?

A single, small leak can result in thousands of gallons of wasted water per month. For example, a leak that loses just 200 gallons of water a day equals 6,000 gallons of water a month! Beyond the environmental impact, this directly leads to a high water bill and unnecessary costs for water and sewer. Detecting a pool leak early helps you avoid paying for water you never get to use.

Are Toilet and Indoor Leaks as Bad as Pool Leaks?

While toilet leaks and dripping indoor fixtures can waste many gallons daily, pool leaks are often worse because of the sheer volume of water involved. Leaks in the pool are sometimes outdone only by a broken water main in terms of gallons wasted. A running toilet can leak into the toilet bowl continuously, but a hidden pool leak may be even more of a culprit if your water bill so high doesn't make sense.

What Should I Do If I Suspect a Pool Leak?

Check your water meter to see if water is being used when all fixtures are off.
Observe the swimming pool water level over time, especially after refilling.
Look for water waste around the pool area.
Turn off the pool equipment and see if the water level still drops.

If you still can’t find the leak, call in professional leak detection and repair. At South Texas Pool Leak Detection, we quickly find the source of the leak and recommend the best solutions using advanced Leaktronics equipment.

Can I Get Bill Adjustments Due to a Hidden Water Leak?

If your water bill is unusually high and a water leak is confirmed, contact your water customer service department. Some cities allow for bill adjustments due to sudden spikes caused by verified leaks. Keep records of repairs and leak detection reports from a professional service. This documentation may help you receive a bill adjustment, lowering your utility bill after excess water use.

How Do Bill Adjustments Work and What If My High Bill Persists?

Each utility company has different policies for water bill adjustments. Often, they require proof of leak detection and a repair invoice. If you receive a bill that you feel is too high, don’t ignore it—take action before the next bill arrives. Continued high water use may point to another hidden leak or unresolved water main issue.

Tips to Prevent Pool Leaks and Keep Water Bills in Check

Pool owners can save water and money by keeping up with regular maintenance. Here are some strategies:
Schedule pool leak detection checks annually.
Repair any cracks or plumbing issues in the swimming pool right away.
Check for leaks in toilets, water heater, and irrigation systems.
Inspect the water meter and usage for sudden changes.
Practice water conservation habits, like using a pool cover and setting water timers.
